Andrew Mitchell MP meets Bishop of Birmingham to discuss issues affecting Sutton Coldfield and the upcoming Papal visit

Andrew Mitchell MP has met with Rt Reverend Bernard Longley, the Archbishop of Birmingham, to discuss issues affecting Sutton Coldfield and the upcoming papal visit to the area.

The Archbishop heads the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham which covers the counties of Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

As part of the papal tour it is understood Pope Benedict XVI will visit St Mary’s College in New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield, where he will meet the Bishops of England, Scotland and Wales.

The Rt Reverend was appointed Archbishop of Birmingham in October 2009 and will play a leading role in the plans for the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, expected to take place in Birmingham during the Pope’s visit.

Mr Mitchell will be helping the Archbishop contact other MPs in the Archdiocese to notify them of the visit.

Andrew Mitchell MP said, “The Archbishop and I have talked about issues affecting Sutton Coldfield as well as the Pope’s planned visit here.

“It is a great honour to host Pope Benedict XVI, and I am very pleased that we are able to welcome him.”
