Andrew Mitchell MP supports 1Goal ‘Education for All’ campaign alongside Sutton’s Hill West Primary School

Andrew Mitchell, MP for Sutton Coldfield, and Secretary of State for International Development has reiterated his support for the 1Goal Global Campaign for Education and congratulated another Sutton Coldfield school that has taken part in the project.

1Goal comes off the back of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and aims to ensure that ‘Education for all’ is the lasting legacy of the competition. Andrew Mitchell attended the 1Goal Summit in South Africa last week that was organised by President Jacob Zuma of South Africa.

Many schools throughout the UK have supported the campaign, including Hill West Primary School in Sutton Coldfield. As part of their project all pupils, parents and grandparents at Hill West knitted a 56.5 metre long scarf, calling the Government to help children living in poverty around the world go to school. Diane Hardeman, Teaching Assistant and 1Goal Co-ordinator, said the children had a thoroughly enjoyable day of knitting, knowing that in doing so they were campaigning for education for all children throughout the world. Andrew is pictured here with the scarf rolled up into an enormous ball.

Mr. Mitchell, who last week took International Development questions in the House of Commons, four of which referred to the 1Goal campaign, said:

“I have really enjoyed talking to school children throughout Sutton about the 1Goal Global Campaign for Education. Young people can play a crucial role in bringing about change and it is encouraging to see so many of our young people who want to take action in their own community to help other less fortunate children.

“Students can sign up for the 1GOAL campaign, buy ethical products or tell their friends and families about development. The UK Government believes that education offers the best route out of poverty for those living in the world’s poorest countries. 73 million children around the world do not go to school because they do not have a school to go to. That’s why we support every effort to make the education of children across the world the lasting legacy of the 2010 World Cup.”
