Andrew Mitchell MP supports Mere Green students producing and selling home-grown food

Andrew Mitchell MP and Councillor Meirion Jenkins have visited Waitrose Four Oaks to support children from Mere Green Primary School with the ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme.

The ‘Grow and Sell’ initiative supported by TV Gardener Alan Titchmarsh aims to teach Primary School children about a wide variety of foods, where food comes from and entrepreneurial skills. With the support of Waitrose the School’s Gardening Club
has been given seed kits, equipment and growing instructions to grow their own produce which they will sell to Waitrose customers later in the year.

Andrew Mitchell MP, said “Waitrose in Four Oaks enjoys a good relationship with the local community. By growing fresh produce in their own vegetable patches the children from the School’s Gardening Club have gained a better understanding of food and consequently are eating more healthily and opting for a wider variety of food.”

During his visit Sutton Coldfield’s MP also heard about the community effort in Mere Green to restore the wooden planters which are currently not in use. The School, local businesses and Waitrose are working together to brighten up the Mere Green area.”
