Andrew Mitchell MP supports National Specials Weekend in Sutton Coldfield

Andrew Mitchell MP has met Inspector Andy Russell at Sutton Coldfield police station to support the Special Constabulary in advance of National Specials Weekend.

Andrew Mitchell discussed the role of the Special Constabulary in Sutton Coldfield and how they form a vital part of the police force. Inspector Andy Russell described how the volunteers are involved in all aspects of police work including patrolling the neighbourhood, crime prevention and policing public events.

Sutton’s MP heard about the plans for this year’s annual National Specials Weekend, including giving out crime prevention advice to the local community. The National Specials Weekend was to centre around the theme of the importance of the Special Constabulary in the Big Society, through a focus on anti-social behaviour.

Andrew Mitchell said, “Although it may not seem to be high level crime, anti-social behaviour is a key determinant of our quality of life in Sutton Coldfield. The Special Constabulary play an incredibly valuable role within the local community helping to tackle ASB and other crimes. Volunteering for the Specials is a very civic minded thing to do. I am extremely grateful to those who volunteer and would encourage anyone thinking about applying to do so immediately.”

Anyone interested in becoming a Special Constable should go to www.west-midlands.police.uk for details on how to apply.
