Andrew Mitchell MP supports war memorial conservation programme for Royal Sutton Coldfield’s 43 World War memorials

The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP met with Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement in England, and pledged support for their First World War Memorial Programme to ensure that the many memorials in the Royal Town are ‘fit for heroes’.

The programme aims to inspire local communities across the country to survey and conserve their local war memorials to ensure that by the end of the centenary of the First World War, as many as possible are in good condition and 'fitting tributes to the fallen'. Of the 43 War Memorials erected across the Town, 30 are dedicated to those who fought during the First World War.

The nationwide programme, run jointly by Civic Voice, Historic England, Imperial War Museum and War Memorials Trust, plans to record the condition of 20,000 memorials in England over the next 3 years, 500 of which are located across Birmingham & the Black Country.

Mr Mitchell discussed the programme with Sarah James of Civic Voice at his constituency office in Sutton Coldfield before visiting the King Edwards Square War Memorial.

Following the meeting Mr Mitchell said, “I am extremely supportive of this innovative campaign to preserve memorials in honour of those who served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedom and beliefs that we continue to enjoy today. I want to take this opportunity to encourage our community in the Royal Town to volunteer and help in identifying all 30 of Sutton Coldfield's First World War memorials so that they can be surveyed and preserved for the future.”
