Andrew Mitchell visits Good Hope to meet to meet top official running Royal Sutton’s hospital

Andrew Mitchell has visited Good Hope to discuss recent developments at the hospital with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nurse.

Top subjects included what the Heart of England Trust was doing to tackle the deficit with financial improvement forecasted towards the end of this year. Andrew also heard about the ongoing digital infrastructure projects which includes a merged electronic patient record service between the Heart of England and the University Hospitals Birmingham Trusts which would deliver a joined up and more responsive service for patients.

However, there were also some concerns about the training and retention of staff with the Trust trying to tackle its overreliance on temporary staffing – temporary staffing bank rates will see some changes in due course in order to address this. Another topic of concern was the difficulty for patients accessing mental health beds.

Andrew also discussed the details of his campaign to bring Sutton Cottage Hospital back into more productive use which was warmly welcomed.

Andrew Mitchell said:

“Meeting with the officials at Good Hope Hospital is always helpful. I am encouraged by the Government’s announcement to provide the NHS with an additional £20.5 billion by 2023/24, and indeed the Mental Health Taskforce’s new national strategy which sets out an ambitious vision for mental health services. They badly need investment locally.

“I remain determined to ensure that the quality of the health service in Sutton continues to increase year by year. The concerns raised by the Hospital are my concerns and help inform the discussions I have with the Health Secretary.”
