Andrew Mitchell visits Sutton Coldfield Muslim Association to discuss initiatives that seek to open doors to wider community
Andrew Mitchell has met the new Chairman of Trustees of the Sutton Coldfield Muslim Association (SCMA) - Mrs Shahana Kahn - together with other new Committee members of the Association, following an Open Day event held at the Meeting House in the centre of Sutton Codlfield.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues facing the Muslim community and any matters they might like to raise with him.
Visitors to the Open Day had been given an explanation of the basic tenets of Islam, prayer rituals and the importance that faith has on everyday lives and highlighted the social action projects that Muslim communities across the UK are involved in, often focussing on homelessness and refugees. Last year Muslims in Britain gave an estimated £100 million to charity during the holy month of Ramadan.
Andrew Mitchell said “The Sutton Coldfield Muslim Association are integrated and supportive members of the Royal Town community and our discussions are always constructive and helpful. The decisions emanating from the new US administration demonstrate the need for greater understanding between those of all - and no - faiths, and following a year that has seen an increase in Islamophobia across the UK and Europe I am pleased to see so many taking this opportunity to show solidarity with the Muslim community in the UK, and to learn more about this interesting religion”.
