From the Royal Town to Westminster - School debaters visit the heart of democracy

Following an invitation from Sutton Coldfield’s Member of Parliament, students who took part in this year’s Inter-Schools Debating competition travelled to the Houses of Parliament as part of a celebration of the annual event organised by Andrew.

The students, which came from the seven Sutton Coldfield secondary schools and the Sutton Campus of the Birmingham Metropolitan College, had a full tour of the Houses of Parliament and took lunch with the Royal Town’s MP which was followed by a Q&A session. They also attended the chamber of the House of Commons for lively exchanges between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

Hot topics included Brexit and intergenerational unfairness as well as a general discussion about the young debaters’ future careers.

Andrew Mitchell MP said:
“I always look forward to welcoming the debaters to the Houses of Parliament. I hope they enjoyed their day at Westminster.

“I would like to extend a special thanks to the Birmingham Metropolitan College for their generosity in sponsoring the trophies and the visit to the House of Commons for the participants as well as Bishop Vesey Grammar School who hosted the Competition this year and organised it all so well.”
