Westminster Column - School Leavers

This week I am directing my column to all of my constituents who will be leaving school today. Most importantly, I would like to congratulate you all on getting through your final exams – I look forward to receiving news of high achievement across all our secondary schools in Royal Sutton Coldfield in August. I often speak to your head teachers, and know that you have all been working extremely hard towards your exams. I am sure all that hard work will be well rewarded come results day.

Many of you will now be thinking about what you will go on to do next. I know that a large number of you will already have your places secured at university for September. Some of you may have decided against the university route, or have decided to do something else for a while before deciding whether to continue to study at a later date. For all those who have made that decision, I know that the current job market can look intimidating.

I believe that tackling youth unemployment should be one of our top priorities. It is to you that we look for the future stability and prosperity of the country, and so everything that can be done should be done to make sure that you reach your full potential.

It is for this reason that today I am hosting a Jobs and Careers Fair in our Town Hall. I do hope that many of you will take the opportunity to attend to hear more about the options open to you as you start thinking about your next steps. Business from a range of sectors, many of which have vacancies, will be there for you to talk to, and there will be a series of presentations and workshops to attend. The aim of this job fair is to give you as much information as possible, to make sure you make a well informed decision about what you do next, and choose something that will suit you and set you on the path to a fulfilling and satisfying career.

Whether you are trying to find a job or going on to further study, the end of your time at school is an incredibly exciting time. I hope that you all have a well-deserved break after your exams, and come back refreshed and excited to start the next stage in your lives. I look forward to seeing what you will all do.

Best wishes from your Member of Parliament,

Andrew Mitchell
