Andrew Mitchell MP hails promising developments for the revitilisation of Sutton Cottage Hospital after meeting with the new Birmingham Community Healthcare Chief Executive.
Andrew Mitchell MP has met with the newly appointed Chief Executive of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Richard Kirby, to discuss the campaign to revitalise the Sutton Cottage Hospital which once provided ‘in patient’ care but currently provides only limited services and treatments.
Last October, Mr Mitchell unveiled ambitious plans to shake up services at a landmark hospital in Sutton Coldfield and transform it into a multi-disciplinary care and support service for the elderly.
Under the proposals Sutton Coldfield Cottage Hospital would provide care to those who need to be seen within 24 to 48 hours in order to prevent hospital admission and offer a variety of new specialist clinics under the proposals.
Andrew Mitchell has worked closely with Dame Julie Moore, Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham, as well as former Sutton Cottage Hospital Nurses, some of whom had worked at the hospital for more than 30 years, to explore what better use could be made of Cottage Hospital.
During the meeting with Mr Kirby, Mr Mitchell explained the historical significance of the hospital - which was bequeathed to the town in the mid-1800s.
Following the meeting, Mr Mitchell said:
“This was a constructive meeting and I am pleased that Mr Kirby has taken onboard my proposals which will hopefully form part of the new service model for Birmingham which will be put forward this Autumn.
“Ultimately, I would like to see our Royal Cottage Hospital once again to be used for the medical treatment of elderly local residents with the central aim of allowing my elderly constituents to remain in their own homes while living longer with multiple conditions yet saving the NHS/Social Care from the added expense of alternative provisions of care.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank Dame Julie who has been most supportive and will also be integral in realising plans to utilise the potential of Royal Sutton Coldfield Cottage Hospital for the benefit of my constituents.”
