Andrew Mitchell, MP for Sutton Coldfield, has met with Denise McLellan, Chief Executive of the Birmingham and Solihull NHS Cluster at the offices of the Heart of England Primary Care Trust (PCT) in Edgbaston. Andrew convened the meeting as an introduction as well as an opportunity to discuss health care provision in Sutton Coldfield during this interim period which will see Primary Care Trusts replaced with GP Consortia by 2013. Mr Mitchell was keen to ascertain what the changes would mean for Sutton Coldfield as well as to ensure the best deal possible for his constituents during this interim period. Andrew was particularly concerned about the needs of Sutton’s elderly and mentally ill and asked what the Cluster is doing to address the care needs of these two particularly vulnerable groups. MP and Chief Executive discussed the challenges facing the NHS in the years ahead as well as the Cluster’s vision to strengthen commissioning, improve quality and assure safety, tackle health inequalities and make best use of NHS resources. Ultimately the Cluster aims to secure a financially sustainable legacy for the GP consortia to whom they will handover the role of commissioning in 2013. Mr Mitchell heard how the Cluster is uniting with patients, clinicians and a wide range of diverse organisations across the region to help them achieve the best in care and quality of life for those who use its services.
