A scheme to help Sutton school children develop the leadership skills they will need in later life has culminated in a special award ceremony at Arthur Terry School where Sutton’s MP Andrew Mitchell marked the pupils’ achievements with the presentation of certificates. The new initiative - International Young Leaders Award - recognises and develops leadership skills in young people and has an added international dimension that encourages young people to broaden their horizons and look further afield. As part of the award students had to raise awareness of an international issue by giving presentations to show leadership in schools. Arthur Terry pupil, Adam Walker, was the first recipient nationally after raising awareness of the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, giving presentations and holding assemblies. Other pupils from Arthur Terry visited South Africa where they worked in a township. They also raised awareness in school and did some fundraising for South Africa. Arthur Terry Assistant Headteacher, Sue Bailey said, “The International Young Leader Award is very much about developing skills as these students are the teachers, doctors, and even politicians of the future who, by taking part in this award, will have the ability to work with others in partnership. “Arthur Terry also acknowledges its partnership with African Space Trust and the work they do to support communities in Africa and the work they are now doing with other schools to develop this.” Andrew Mitchell MP said, “Congratulations to all those students that took part in this Award. The skills they have gained through this scheme will set them up for later life and I am sure we have some great leaders of the future here.”
