Andrew Mitchell MP has visited Tesco Extra in New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield, to celebrate the success of five local schools in the “Tesco for Schools and Clubs” award scheme. The scheme was set up in 2009 in direct response to the needs of schools and clubs across the UK, amalgamating the former Computers for Schools and Sports for Schools and Clubs schemes. From the 1 March to the 9 May of this year, shoppers in Sutton Coldfield received vouchers which they donated to a school or club of their choice. These schools and clubs were then able to choose what equipment they wanted – from paints and canvases to cricket bats, digital cameras, computer software and recycling bins. Presenting the new equipment to the pupils and Headteacher of Banners Gate Junior School, Sutton’s MP said: “Tesco for Schools and Clubs scheme is a good example of a large corporation giving something back to the local community. “Thousands of my constituents have been collecting vouchers to help their local schools and clubs get this new equipment, showing what can happen when a whole community gets involved.”
