Sutton Coldfield’s Vesey Ward Councillors have secured a significant review of primary retail frontage policies following their representations to Birmingham City Council on behalf of Boldmere residents. Vesey Councillors Malcolm Cornish, Alan Rudge and Stuart Clarkson have raised numerous objections and represented local views to the Council following concerns about the level of fast food outlets on Boldmere Road. Local activist Lyn Collin has also been out with the Councillors listening to residents’ views. As a result of their representations the City Council’s Planning and Regeneration team are soon to draw up a new Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to define centre boundaries and set up appropriate measures to control non-retail uses. A public consultation exercise on the draft SPD is likely to be undertaken during the summer and public and trader input into the process will be sought. Sutton’s Councillors have welcomed the review as has local MP Andrew Mitchell who is supporting their efforts. After receiving numerous letters and emails from concerned constituents Mr Mitchell wrote to Stephen Hughes, Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council, expressing his support for Vesey Councillors’ representations and expressed his own concern about the “proliferation of fast food outlets and restaurants in the area.” Councillor Malcolm Cornish said, “The level of fast food outlets in Boldmere has caused us and local residents great concern so we have taken the issue straight to the Council. I am really pleased with this forthcoming policy review which is a result of our hard work and will be making sure the emphasis on this is not lost.” Andrew Mitchell MP said, “I am giving my full support to our local Councillors who lead on this matter. I know they have been working hard objecting to these types of proposals and have secured this policy review which is good news for Sutton.”
