Weekly Message to Constituents 142 - Happy New Year

As we approach the end of a well-earned break with family and friends, I wanted to write you a quick note ahead of the New Year.

2022 has been nothing short of extraordinary, with many twists and turns few would have predicted.

Just as the pandemic started to peter out, the world plunged into crisis once again as a result of Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine. While devastating for the brave Ukrainian people, the effects have hit us directly here, with energy prices, inflation and living costs soaring.

These difficulties, however, did not stop the British people from putting others first, whether by opening our homes and hearts to thousands of refugees fleeing from brutality, or supporting those in our communities who have been hit hardest by the economic storms. This past year I have visited many organisations in Sutton Coldfield who are championing the needs of others. I’d like to thank all of you for volunteering, organising and donating on the many wonderful causes promoted in our Royal Town.

I would like to say a special thank you to all our Royal Town councillors who serve us all so very well - both those who bat for us on Birmingham City Council and on the Royal Town Council (and in some cases on both!) and to our Royal Town Mayor Janet Cairns , Birmingham’s Lord Mayor , our own Maureen Cornish from Four Oaks and regional Mayor, Andy Street.

We have a terrific team fighting our corner here in Sutton Coldfield, and thankfully we now have the right prime minister to lead our country back to prosperity: fighting inflation, helping the most vulnerable and investing in our vital public services.

As Mrs Thatcher – the first prime minister I served under - famously remarked upon entering Downing Street: where there is despair, may we bring hope.

And so I wish to end on a hopeful note to all my constituents.

May 2023 bring you good health and happiness. May we all prosper, and may there be peace.

Happy New Year!

Thanking those who serve our community.
